Two new mills join the fold—a new base 3.3-liter V6 with 290 horsepower, and a 3.0-liter PowerStroke turbodiesel V6 that will join the lineup next spring. That engine is said to best the already best-in-class capability of the F-150, which currently offers the segment benchmarks of 13,200 lbs. max towing, 3,270 lbs. max payload, and 470 lb-ft of torque.

Yet Motor Trend doesn’t award models for being the best at everything, and what really hit home for them was Ford’s attention to detail on every level. For example, one might expect a base engine to be a slouch, but the new 3.3-liter V6’s smooth acceleration and ability to tow 5,000 lbs. without sweat impressed them. A Lariat truck with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost—now home to 400 lb-ft of torque and 325 horsepower—evoked similar reactions.

A lot of Ford models have been making headlines in 2017, from the new F-150 to the returning Bronco and Ranger. All of these models have their place in the pantheon of automotive history, but for our customers—particularly those who might come to us from outside our locale—a time-tested reputation is only one part of what makes a car like the 2018 Mustang GT so special.

This year also marks the half-way point of the pony car’s sixth generation, which meant a refresh was in order. But Ford didn’t cut any corners in keeping this already-modern Mustang current. They updated the exterior design for style and aerodynamics, while updating the engine lineup and adding new features.

Part of that is due to the automatic gear box’s quicker shifts, but also owed to the more aggressive chassis tuning and cornering bite of the added equipment. Even without these options, every GT gets Drag Strip Mode, which puts peak torque under your foot from the moment you step on the gas up to the red line.

Those in residential areas will love the Active Valve Performance Exhaust, which lets you modulate the Coyote’s roar into a more in-door appropriate voice with “Quiet Mode.” This lowers the engine noise to the decibel of your average dishwasher.
